As a crypto API provider, part of our job is to understand what other providers build. We review public documentation, pricing, product flows, and evidence we can verify. This review explains what we confirmed about NOWPayments, where it may fit, and its important limits.
This review covers public information only. We did not use an account to test NOWPayments response times, settlement speed, support, uptime, or production behaviour.

What Does the NOWPayments API Do?
The NOWPayments API page presents APIs for payments, mass payouts, custody, customer management, recurring payments, and fiat withdrawals. Hosted invoices, links, plugins, widgets, buttons, donation tools, and point of sale provide lower-code launch options.
The default flow is non-custodial: a merchant supplies a destination wallet. Optional custody adds balances, internal transfers, customer operations, and later conversion.
What NOWPayments Does Well
The main advantage is breadth.
- Broad asset choice. Current product pages state that 300+ assets are available.
- Several launch paths. Teams can use an API, hosted invoice, plugin, widget, or link.
- Recurring billing and mass payouts. These suit subscriptions, affiliates, payroll, gaming, and marketplaces.
- Custody choice. The normal flow is non-custodial, with optional custody for eligible merchants.
- Signed notifications. IPNs use HMAC SHA-512.
- Payment recovery. Extra Deposits Auto Processing covers some supported wrong-asset or wrong-network deposits.
Fiat Coverage Depends on Providers
NOWPayments does offer fiat functions. Its API page advertises deposits in 20+ fiat currencies and crypto-to-fiat bank payout. Its help material says a merchant can request payment in US dollars or another currency through a SEPA transfer.
Access depends on the fiat provider, account, country, and KYC or KYB approval. We did not find a current public page that confirms direct native settlement to an NGN or GHS bank. Ask for the exact currency, rail, timing, price, and partner in writing.
Conversion Changes the Service Fee
The 0.5% headline applies when no exchange is required. The published fee rises to 1% for a multi-currency payment, a fixed-rate payment, or a payment where the user pays the fee.
This distinction matters when customers pay in many assets but the business receives one asset or currency. Model the actual path, not the lowest headline alone.
NOWPayments Fees Explained
The NOWPayments fee page publishes this transaction service-fee schedule:
| Payment Type | Published Service Fee |
|---|---|
| Merchant receives the same asset paid by the customer | 0.5% |
| Multi-currency payment that requires exchange | 1% |
| Fixed-rate payment | 1% |
| “Fee paid by user” payment | 1% |
For a simple $1,000 illustration:
This is not a full quote. It only applies the public transaction percentage to a $1,000 amount. It does not compare exchange rates, account-specific terms, or third-party fiat-provider charges.
Payment Recovery and Exceptions
NOWPayments deserves credit for its Extra Deposits Auto Processing feature. When it is enabled, the system can process certain payments made in another asset or network if NOWPayments supports what arrived. Its public example describes a customer sending one supported USDT network instead of another.
Integration and Developer Experience
NOWPayments provides a sandbox, documentation, examples, callbacks, and current asset and estimate endpoints. Its IPN guide explains HMAC SHA-512 verification. Plugins and hosted tools can reduce front-end work.
Compliance and Procurement Questions
NOWPayments says FD Transfers LLC is incorporated in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and that no specific licence is required under its incorporation law. It says licensed partners provide relevant services and that AML, KYC, or KYB controls can apply.
Who should choose the NOWPayments API?
NOWPayments is relevant when you need:
- Access to more than 300 crypto assets;
- Plugins or hosted tools for a global online store;
- Subscription billing or payment links;
- Mass crypto payouts;
- Optional custody and customer balance operations;
- A non-custodial default flow;
- A fiat route that your account and provider can support.
Final Verdict on the NOWPayments API
NOWPayments supports global crypto payments with broad asset support, merchant tools, payment recovery, mass payouts, and several integration methods. Buyers should evaluate the added conversion charge, provider-dependent fiat coverage, and settlement route for each target market.
However, if you want a focused route from customer crypto payments to stablecoin, NGN, or GHS settlement without managing provider-dependent fiat routes, gas fees, or wallet sweeping, try Breet API.
